Trails & Access
Access routes
The most popular route. Start at Case di Viso (1763 m), a hamlet of Pezzo reachable by car from Ponte di Legno, and climb to the hut on a well-kept mule track. Suitable for families with children used to the mountains.
Start directly at Passo del Tonale (1883 m) and walk across the Lombard side through the alpine pastures. A good option if you're staying at Tonale and want to leave the car behind.
Trentino-side approach starting from Pejo Fonti. Climb to the Forcella del Montozzo (2613 m), then descend on the Lombard side to the hut. Long and scenic, best done in stable weather.
A quieter, very scenic alternative. Park at the fourth hairpin of the Passo del Tonale road (Via Tonalina), climb to Dosso di Meda, then join CAI trail 63 to the hut. For fit walkers.
Without walking
In high season, when Passo del Tonale is fully operational, the hut can be reached without doing the whole walk.
In high season the Contrabbandieri chairlift climbs from Passo del Tonale: it takes you up and shortens the route, but the last stretch to the hut is still on foot.
A shuttle bus connects Case di Viso and Ponte di Legno: handy if you arrive without a car, or if you'd rather not move it during the day.
Don't want to walk? The CAI 52 trail from Case di Viso is also rideable by e-bike or mountain bike. At the hut we have a charging point for electric bikes.
